October is cooperative month



Pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 493, s. 2004, the cooperative movement of the Philippines

celebrates Cooperative Month every October. The celebration this year focuses on the theme

“Cooperatives: The Catalyst of Change through Poverty Eradication and Social Transformation.”

The celebration led by the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA), will be highlighted by the

2016 Gawad Parangal, which recognizes outstanding cooperatives, cooperative leaders, and partners

for their exemplary performance and invaluable contribution to the cooperative movement.

The Philippine Cooperative Center (PCC) and the CDA, as lead convener and co-convener,

respectively, will hold the 13th National Cooperative Summit at the SMX Convention Center, SM

Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City, on October 24-26, 2016. Over 5,000 cooperative leaders from

all over the Philippines are expected to attend the summit.

Cooperatives all over the country will also be hosting various other activities, including fun

runs/walks, parades, motorcades, information drives and campaigns to further promote the movement

through guesting in television and radio programs, seminars/lectures on food safety and/or risk

management, sports events such as trade and agro fairs, bazaars, coop exhibits, festivals, feeding

 programs, blood donation, and medical and dental missions.

The cooperative movement helps empower the poor and marginalized sectors of society. “Founded on
the principles of private initiative, entrepreneurship and self-employment, underpinned by the values

of democracy, equality and solidarity, the co-operative movement can help pave the way to a more

just and inclusive economic order,” according to Kofi Annan, former United Nations secretary-
